From "Should" to "Must" - Reflections on Why We Make Disciples. The Why of Disciple Making

From "Should" to "Must" - Reflections on Why We Make Disciples

I hope this message finds you well and that you've had time to reflect on Sunday's powerful message about disciple-making. Justin's transparency about his own struggles and Peter's journey with Jesus gave us much to consider about our own walk with the Lord.

Summary: The sermon explored why disciple-making often ends up in our "should box" - those things we know we ought to do but don't feel are essential to our lives. Through the story of Peter in Luke 5:1-11, we saw how Jesus spent nearly a year walking with Peter before that pivotal moment on the shore. After a frustrating night of catching nothing, Peter obeyed Jesus' command to cast his nets again, resulting in an overwhelming catch. This miracle revealed a profound truth: we can let go of anything when we see that Jesus is our everything. The message challenged us to move disciple-making from our "should box" to our "must box" - not out of mere obedience, but because we're hungry for the fullest life that comes through fullest surrender.

Takeaways:

  • People follow, give themselves to, and trust in whatever they believe will give them life. Our "should box" contains things we've decided aren't necessary for a full life, but Jesus gets to define what truly gives life.
  • The fullest life comes through the fullest surrender. Peter had a good life before fully following Jesus, but he discovered something greater when he left everything behind.
  • We make disciples for three reasons: to become like Jesus (who gave himself to making disciples), to participate in God's grand story of building his kingdom, and because we genuinely care about people who are separated from God.

I encourage you to spend time this week asking God if disciple-making has been sitting in your "should box." Ask Him to show you what the "from now on" looks like for your life. Remember, we all want to be loved, wanted, to make a difference, and to be part of something eternal - and there's nothing that fulfills those desires more fully than Jesus' plan for us to make disciples.

Let's pray for one another as we seek to surrender more fully to what God is calling us to do.
